Jasmine Crockett and Dan Goldman among first to propose House bills that would ban former presidents from running again

By the CNN Wire Staff

The proposals come on the heels of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by Donald Trump loyalists.

(CNN) Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett of Texas and Congressman Dan Goldman of New York introduced legislation on Monday that would bar former presidents from seeking elected office again if they have been impeached and convicted.

The legislation comes as Congress considers how to respond to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by a mob of Donald Trump supporters who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump was impeached by the House for inciting the insurrection, but the Senate acquitted him.

Crockett, a Democrat, said her bill is "about protecting our democracy from those who would seek to undermine it."

"I believe that those who have been impeached and convicted of inciting an insurrection against our country should not be allowed to hold office again," she said in a statement.

Goldman, also a Democrat, said his bill is "designed to prevent those who have committed the most serious offenses against our democracy from holding office again."

"The January 6th attack was a direct assault on our democracy," he said in a statement. "We must do everything we can to prevent something like this from happening again."

It is unclear how much support either bill has in Congress. Both chambers are controlled by the Democrats, but some members have expressed concerns about setting a precedent for disqualifying presidents from office.
