Goals From Sentnor, Dahlien Help Send U.S. To FIFA U20 Round Of 16

U.S. women's U20 national soccer team advances in FIFA U20 tournament with 4-0 win

The U.S. women's U20 national soccer team clinched their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup on Tuesday following a 4-0 victory against Jamaica.

The victory marked the second straight time the U.S. has advanced to the knockout round of the tournament, as back in 2018, they made it to the quarterfinals. The U.S. opened the game with an early goal as Ella Sentnor capitalized on a turnover by Jamaica on the right flank just in the fifth minute of the game. This gave the U.S. an advantage in the game. The U.S. continued to control the momentum of the match. Midfielder Brianna Pinto took a shot on goal, but it was saved by Jamaican goalie Kionna Duncan. The U.S. was presented with a penalty kick 45 minutes into the game when Sentnor was taken down in the box by Jamaica's Tiernny Wiltshire. Alyssa Dahlien stepped up and sent a rocket into the lower left corner of the net to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead. This gave the team more momentum and drive going into the second half. The U.S. continued to put pressure on Jamaica coming out of the break, and it wasn't long before they added another goal. Ashley Sanchez intercepted a pass in the midfield and quickly sent the ball to Avery Patterson, who was sprinting down the left side. Patterson then crossed the ball to Sentnor, who headed it home for her second goal of the match. Mikayla Colohan wasted no time putting the game away, scoring in the 59th minute after some nice passing from the U.S. Dahlien sent a cross into the box that found the head of Sentnor, who flicked it on to Colohan. Colohan fired the ball home from close range, which solidified the U.S.'s victory and clinched their spot in the Round of 16. The U.S. held Jamaica to just two shots in the entire game, and both were off target.

The U.S. will now face the winner of the match between Japan and the Netherlands. The game will be played on Thursday, August 11 at 10 a.m. ET.
