Danone, Ajinomoto team up to tackle feed-related emissions

Danone and Ajinomoto forge partnership to reduce methane emissions in dairy supply chain through feed additives

Strategic partnership aligns with Danone's 'One Planet. One Health' vision and Ajinomoto's commitment to sustainable solutions

Paris, France and Tokyo, Japan – Danone, a leading global food and beverage company, and Ajinomoto, a global leader in the production of amino acids and other food ingredients, today announced a strategic partnership to reduce methane emissions in the dairy supply chain. The partnership will leverage Ajinomoto's expertise in feed additives to develop and implement innovative solutions that mitigate methane production from dairy cows.

Dairy cows are significant contributors to global methane emissions, a greenhouse gas with a warming potential 25 times higher than carbon dioxide. Methane emissions from livestock account for approximately 14.5% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, with dairy cows contributing a substantial portion of this amount.

The partnership between Danone and Ajinomoto aims to address this challenge by exploring the use of feed additives that can effectively reduce methane emissions from dairy cows. Ajinomoto has a proven track record in developing and manufacturing high-quality feed additives, including those that have been shown to reduce methane production in cattle.

Danone, with its global presence and commitment to sustainable food production, will work closely with Ajinomoto to implement these solutions on a large scale. The partnership will initially focus on Danone's dairy operations in Europe and North America, with the potential to expand to other regions in the future.

"We are excited to partner with Ajinomoto to accelerate our progress towards reducing methane emissions in our dairy supply chain," said Emmanuel Faber, Chairman and CEO of Danone. "This partnership is a testament to our commitment to 'One Planet. One Health', our vision for a healthier planet and healthier people. By working together, we can drive innovation and create a more sustainable food system."

"We are delighted to join forces with Danone, a global leader in the food and beverage industry, to address the critical issue of methane emissions in the dairy supply chain," said Takaaki Nishii, President and CEO of Ajinomoto. "Our expertise in feed additives, combined with Danone's global reach and commitment to sustainability, will enable us to make a significant contribution to reducing the environmental impact of dairy production."

The partnership between Danone and Ajinomoto is a significant step towards reducing methane emissions in the dairy industry. By leveraging the expertise and resources of both companies, the partnership has the potential to make a meaningful impact on the sustainability of the global food system.
