On August 5th, 1543, French and Turkish troops occupied the city of Nice in present-day France. The occupation was part of a joint Franco-Ottoman campaign against the Holy Roman Empire. The Ottoman naval fleet, led by the famous admiral Dragut, defeated a Spanish fleet in the Battle of Nice, securing control of the Mediterranean Sea for the Ottomans.
